Be aware, it is easy to overfeed a hamster.

It is also easy to be fooled into thinking your hamster has a good appetite and is eating everything you give him!

As in the wild, they will hide food from predators, and that also means you – so, quite often you will see his food bowl empty soon after filling it up, however, chances are he has been busy storing it away somewhere in his cage, out of sight.

This is a perfectly natural thing to do.

They also have pouches in their cheeks which enable them to stash their food and and then move it around their cage.

You will find your Roborovski Hamster Food hidden away for him to munch on later.

It is possible that your hamster will eat any old generic hamster food, however, it is very easy for manufacturer to produce low grade, inferior pet food. So always read the label and compare brands to other brands – you will very quickly see a big difference in the overall quality of the lower priced brands.

I, for one, will only use premium grade food for my pet.

On average there will be a much larger protein content, along with higher quantities of all the other essential nutrients your hamster requires for a healthy, happy life.

Always ensure the bulk of the feed you give is specific food, with the occasional ‘special treat’ food – but don’t overdo the treats and keep to their normal mix most of the time.

There are certains food you MUST NOT give to your hamster:

Certain foods (normally treats) can be harmful and potentially fatal for hamsters to eat – they contains toxins and can be indigestible for their system.

These are BAD for your hamster
  • Almonds
  • Apricot stones
  • Avocado
  • Apple seeds
  • Chocolate
  • Crisps
  • Chips
  • Cherry stones
  • Eggplant
  • Grape seeds
  • Kidney beans
  • Potatoes
  • Pork
  • Peach leaves
  • Tomatoes
  • Watermelon
  • Rhubarb
  • All junk food
  • All citrus foods
  • All canned foods

* As a general rule, one tablespoon full of food will be sufficient, per day, per hamster – water must be available at all times.

 Good foods:

Most other foods are fine to give to your hamster – but these must be given in moderation.

He will get all the nutrients to keep him healthy from premium grade hamster mix like this Supreme Harry Hamster Food – this premium food is designed to give a full diet and comes as a loose mixture for him to nibble on and more around to his stores.

The size is 700grms and costs under £6 all in from Amazon – which should last you a comfortable month or longer.

Another premium mix is the Beaphar Care+ Hamster Food which has all the good stuff for your hamster.

Same size as above at 700 grms, it will also last you a long time – and is currently selling for under £9 all in from Amazon

This is another of the specially formulated mix that make ideal Roborovski Hamster Food – this particular one is also high in all the required nutrients as well as containing Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids.

Don’t forget the water

Your main essential food is water – plain old tap water – unless you are in an area where your water is highly treated with chemicals. In which case, you may want to consider using bottled water.

It’s also worth considering a more specific water bottle feeder. One thats designed for smaller hamsters, like this Ferplast Sippy Water Bottle – it’s a 100cc smaller bottle with the drinking ‘teat’ more suitable for small creatures.

It will cost you under £6 all in from Amazon for the larger size, less for the 100cc size and I think it’s well worth it – I have always found the other type of old fashioned bottle feeders to drip far too much and cause the cage to get wet – making cleaning and changing a lot more often.

*don’t forget – fresh water every day will definitely benefit your hamster.

Being one of the fastest and more hard working of the dwarf hamsters, a Roborovski will drink quite a lot to keep himself refreshed, so always keep an eye on the water bottle and never let it run dry.
